The University of Melbourne was the second university to be established in Australia, the first for the state of Victoria. The legislation for its establishment was passed by parliament in early 1853, the foundation stone laid in July 1854 and classes commenced in April 1855. Initially the University boasted only four faculties and sixteen students. By the end of the 20th century there was a total of around 34,000 students and 13 faculties.
