La Trobe University was first established by the Victorian Parliament in 1964 and was opened and began classes in 1967. The 196 hectare campus in Bundoora, 16 km from the city of Melbourne, is the University's main campus. At the conclusion of the 20th century over 22,000 students studied at the University.
