The School of Chemistry was one of the original schools at La Trobe University, when classes first began in 1967. At some time during the 1990s the school became the Department within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering's School of Environmental and Resource Science.

The Department of Chemistry is now within the School of Molecular Sciences in the Faculty of of Science, Technology and Engineering.
