On January 1, 1998, a merger took place between Victoria University of Technology's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Civil and Building Engineering. The result was the School of the Built Environment, which was part of the Faculty of Engineering and Science.

In 2006 the School of the Built Environment did not appear to exist anymore. It has most likely been incorporated in to the School of Architectural, Civil and Mechanical Engineering within the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science.
