Established in 1872, the Victorian Department of Agriculture was a branch of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey. The Department was mainly concerned with the control of stock disease. It gained its independence as a Department in 1890. In 1985 the Department changed its name to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
