First established in 1917, the Australian Chemical Institute (ACI) received a Royal Charter in 1932, but did not become known as the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) until 1953. The ACI initially consisted of a Victorian, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australian branch. In 1933 a Western Australian branch was formed followed by a Tasmanian one in 1940c.
