Function: Marine Science and Industrial or Scientific Research
Location: Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Marine Research can trace its history back to the CSIRO's Fisheries Investigation Section, which existed up until the late 1930s. Various name and structural changes have followed, seeing the Division separating into the components of Fisheries and Oceanography, and rejoining to form CSIRO Marine Research in 1997.

From their Web site, November 2002: "CSIRO Marine Research is helping Australians understand its oceans by conducting research in the sustainable use of Australia's marine resources, the ocean's role in climate, and the effective conservation of the marine ecosystem integrity."

On 1 July 2005 CSIRO Marine Research and CSIRO Atmospheric Research merged to create CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research.
