The Division of Wildlife and Ecology was known as the Division of Wildlife and Rangelands Research from 1982 until 1987. The Division conducts research into Australia's wildlife as well as plant and land resources. The Division was based in Canberra but also had facilities in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia. In 2000 the Division was replaced by the new CSIRO Division of Sustainable Ecosystems.
