The Australian Atomic Energy Commission Research Laboratories were established in September 1981. The Laboratories took control of functions previously undertaken by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission and the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, Research Establishment. In April 1987 the Laboratories were replaced by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.
