At the end of 1987, an amalgamation between the Divisions of Energy Chemistry and Fossil Fuels saw the creation of the Division of Coal Technology. Existing for only eighteen months, the Division, along with the Divisions of Fuel Technology and Energy Technology, formed the Division of Coal and Energy Technology, in June 1990.
