The Division of Oceanography was created in 1981, when it was decided to divide the Division of Fisheries and Oceanography into its two components, each becoming a separate division. The Division operated from its Hobart premises for almost eighteen years, before it once again joined with the Division of Fisheries, creating the Division of Marine Research, in 1997.
