In 1981, part of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission was incorporated into the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), this became the Division of Energy Chemistry. In 1987 the Division was split up, some sections joining the Division of Fossil Fuels, and becoming the Division of Coal Technology, what was left became the Division of Fuel Technology.
