The Commonwealth Meteorology Research Centre (CMRC) was established in 1969 as a joint venture between the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO, to research and develop numerical prognosis and analysis systems that could be implemented operationally by the Bureau, and to research and develop atmospheric general circulation models to study atmospheric behaviour, with a particular focus on understanding climate variability in the Australian region.

The CMRC was a collaborative venture between the Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO, and was located within the Bureau with access to Bureau facilities. In 1974 it underwent a name change becoming the Australian Numerical Meteorology Research Centre.
