The Australian Coal Preparation Society first began in New South Wales in 1966. A Queensland branch was established the following year. 1989 saw the amalgamation of the two state branches, which have operated as a national society ever since. From their Website, June 2001: "The role of the Australian Coal Preparation Society is to distinguish and consolidate the profession of coal preparation in Australia through education, training and technology transfer, and to assist the Australian industry in maintaining world's best practice."
