| The Marine and Freshwater Resources Institute (MAFRI) was established in July 1996 by the Victorian Government "as the premier Institute to provide research, consultancy and education services required for the sustainable management of aquatic resources and their environment." MAFRI consisted of several former marine and freshwater groups; the Victorian Institute of Marine Science, the Victorian Fisheries Research Institute, part of the Fisheries Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Freshwater Ecology Group of Arthur Rylah Institute. From 1996 MAFRI operated under the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences Act 1974 as a separate business. In 1998 the decision was made to repeal the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences Act 1974 and to include the Institute as part of the Fisheries Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. In 2002 it was handed over to the newly formed Department of Primary Industries. |
