| Dr Walter Rosenhain, a Fellow of the Royal Society and Superintendent of the Metallurgy Department at the United Kingdom's National Physical Laboratory was employed as a consultant by the Australian Government in 1914. He proposed the creation of the National Commonwealth Laboratory whose role would be to establish and maintain national standards of length and mass; standards of measuring instruments and gauges; the testing of materials; and offering advice to, and conducting investigations for industry. The plan was never acted upon. |
