The Department of Science and the Environment was created in December 1978, from the former Department of Science, as well as the environment and conservation functions of the Department of Environment, Housing and Community Development. In November 1980 the Department was renamed the Department of Science and Technology, with the environment functions going into the Department of Home Affairs and Environment.
