A restructuring of the DSTO laboratories in 1987 resulted in the establishment of the Electronics Research Laboratory. The Laboratory retained some sections of the former Electronics Research Laboratory as well as gaining sections from the Advanced Engineering Laboratory. In 1994 the Laboratory merged with the Surveillance Research Laboratory to form the Electronics and Surveillance Research Laboratory.
