The Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing was initially part of the School of Biophysics and Electrical Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology. After some restructuring of the university, it is now part of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies. The Centre is dedicated to inspiring a fascination in the Universe through research and education and is one of the newest and most rapidly growing research centres in Australia. It operates a significant supercomputing facility and a virtual reality theatre and concentrates on problems in astrophysics that benefit from these unique resources. The Centre employs a radical approach of broadening its funding base through a combination of traditional research greats, commerical work, online reaching and University support which has led to spectacular growth since its formation in 1998.
