Established by the CSIRO in 1966, the Australian National Wildlife Collection was gazetted by the Federal Government in 1976. The Collection has been under the control of several CSIRO Divisions, in 2002 it is part of Sustainable Ecosystems.

From their Web site, April 2002: "The primary goal of the Australia National Wildlife Collection is the provision of a national reference record of Australia's vertebrate fauna: its mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians."
