Function: Maratime Industry and Sea Transport
Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Formed in July 1851, the Australasian Steam Navigation Company replaced the Hunter River Steam Navigation Company. Alterations made to the Company meant that it could expand its activities within Australasia, while still servicing the route from Sydney to the Hunter River. Competition from other steamship companies began to arise during the 1850s and continued to grow in the following decades. In 1887 the Australasian Steam Navigation Company was taken over by the newly founded Australasian United Steam Navigation Company.
