The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Black Coal Utilisation was established in July 1995. Areas of research carried out by the CRC included coal science, combustion engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, metallurgy and advanced analytical techniques. In July 2001 the CRC was succeeded by the newly created CRC for Coal in Sustainable Development.
