The Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research was established in 1993 as a joint venture by the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry and the Director of National Parks. From their Web site, December 2002: "A major function of the Centre is to document the biological diversity of the Australian environment through establishing the taxonomic identity and relationships of native plants, their geographical distribution, and their ecological relationships."

It now also encompasses the Australian National Herbarium.
