The Melbourne Hospital was established in 1848, although a temporary hospital had been operating since the early 1840s. The hospital opened a Medical School in 1864 and commenced nurse training in 1889. In March 1935 the Melbourne Hospital became the Royal Melbourne Hospital, after being granted the prefix 'Royal'.
