| Murdoch University is one of five universities in Western Australia. Planning for Murdoch began in 1970. The second university to be established in Western Australia and the seventeenth in Australia, it was formally constituted on 25 July 1973, the date on which the Governor appointed the first members of the University Senate under section 12(1)(9) of the Murdoch University Act. The University’s vision is to “be a prominent and influential research-intensive University in the local, national and global communities. It will be renowned for its teaching quality, research excellence and innovation, and promotion of social and scientific critique. Murdoch University will embrace cultural diversity and ensure an international perspective in its activities, incorporating principles of sustainability, social justice and global responsibility." Additional Information In 1975, its inaugural year, Murdoch University enrolled 672 undergraduate students and had 6 professors. In 2004, Murdoch University had 12,934 students including over 1,989 international students, 553 academic staff (including 47 professors) and 795 general staff. Murdoch University has three campuses. The main campus is located at South Street, Murdoch, 15 kilometres south of Perth and 8 kilometres from the port of Fremantle. The University's first regional campus was established at Rockingham in 1996 and had its first intake of students in July 1997. It was officially opened in 1998. In 2003, Murdoch University was awarded funding for a University Learning Centre in the Peel region. The new Centre, completed in early 2005, is co-located with Mandurah Senior College and Challenger TAFE at the Peel Education and TAFE Campus in Mandurah. The first intake of students at the Peel Campus was in 2004. | |
