On the 1 July 2003 a consortium of research organisations, livestock industry groups, and Government agencies received a seven year grant to establish the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Emerging Infectious Disease (Australian Biosecurity CRC). The CRC was opened in November of that year and its key objectives are to "protect Australia’s public health, livestock, wildlife and economic resources through research and education that strengthens the national capability to detect, diagnose, identify, monitor, assess, predict and respond to emerging infectious disease threats which impact on national and regional biosecurity." taken from their website May 2006.
