The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Sugar Industry Innovation through Biotechnology or CRC Sugar was created in 2003 to "combine Australia's strengths in molecular genetics, sugarcane biology, agriculture, and industrial extraction to construct the essential platform of scientific understanding, intellectual property, and commercial linkages that will underpin a value-added sugarcane industry." Taken from their website May 2006.

CRC Sugar received funding for an intial period of seven years.
