RMIT University's research and development activities concentrate on two related areas - managing and fostering research, and encouraging innovation and its practical application, particularly to the benefit of the Australian community.

The University's research is involved with industry and community concerns and its main focus is on programs which have real-world outcomes. The University seeks to expand its capabilities through the use of multi-disciplinary approaches to problem-solving and the building of strong relationships with industry, government, commerce and the wider community.

At the level of the gene, research focuses on the use of molecular biotechnology to diagnose pathogenic agents, to understand their mechanisms of virulence and pathogenicity, to provide safe and effective vaccines and to produce disease-resistant plants and animals. At the cellular levels, it focuses on the mechanisms underlying non-pathogenic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular defects and Alzheimer's disease to understand the biochemistry involved and to design effective pharmaceuticals.

Biochemistry is also fundamental to toxicological studies of the effects of pollutants on ecosystems and probiotics on microbial toxins. At the whole-body level, the research focuses on the effectiveness of natural therapies and complementary medicines, including clinical testing of Chinese medicines and manipulation in chiropractic and osteopathy. This research is complemented by research on the ethics and efficacy of methodology and treatments used in nursing and public health.
