Biotechnology research at the University of Melbourne is broad-ranging and industry-oriented, attracting substantial sponsorship, collaboration and support from the private sector and government.

Melbourne is driving biotechnology projects of strategic and commercial significance in areas such as process engineering, sanitation, waste treatment and recycling, bioremediation, food quality and preservation, forest production, plant disease resistance, crop improvement, sustainable agriculture, pharmaceuticals development, marine biofouling and natural resource management.

Areas of special research interest include large-scale separations in biotechnology, novel antimicrobial systems and their delivery, non-conventional techniques to extend the shelf life of fresh produce, improved microbiological management of product quality and shelf life in raw milk and dairy products, the molecular basis of tree development and wood formation, DNA repair genes in plants and disease resistance in plants.

Major concentrations of research in these areas at the University are in the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Food Science and Agribusiness, Forestry, Resource Management and Horticulture, Microbiology and Immunology, Botany, Genetics and Zoology.
