Swinburne University of Technology performs research and development in the areas of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and Advanced Materials which is carried out within the School of Engineering and Science, and the Industrial Research Institute Swinburne (IRIS). Swinburne is an innovative university and as such assists industry with research and development via a number of mechanisms.
Swinburne specialises in collaborative research partnerships with Australian companies enabling them to optimise their research and development expenditure through a range of programs, from simple collaborations at Master of Engineering or PhD level, using Professional Research Engineers, or international arrangements involving multiple companies and universities.
A suite of postgraduate courses ranging from Graduate Certificate through Graduate Diploma to Master of Engineering level and PhD, are available. A new innovation is the PhD (Industrial) which is specifically directed to R&D engineers and scientists currently working in industry. The courses are all designed with industrial requirements in mind and they form part of the Career Oriented Learning Program with flexible delivery of one week modules.
Swinburne provides both general and specialised engineering and management training programs and short-courses that can be tailored to the needs of client organisations. These programs enable individuals and companies to improve their knowledge levels in both emerging and established technology fields.
In the area of technology transfer, Swinburne also provides contract research and development, consulting and engineering based problem solving services to Australian industry. Swinburne is a node in a national network of technology-diffusion centres funded by Federal and State Governments, and therefore provides a 'one stop shop' access to a very wide range of technologies.
