Victoria University has significant expertise in researching issues of importance and working with a range of government and industry across several key areas. The University supports a number of designated Research Centres such as the Centre for Packaging, Transportation and Storage and the Optical Technology Research Laboratory, that undertake focussed research activities and have achieved significant external support from industry and Government.

Areas of major research of the Centre for Packaging, Transportation and Storage include commercial solar grain cooling system; dynamics of bulk carriers, and effect of dynamic behaviour on fatigue of small closed containers for liquids.

The Optical Technology Research Laboratory undertakes both basic and applied research on a range of projects funded by government grants and private industry and is well equipped with advanced and excellent optical and optoelectronic facilities. The Centre conducts research in all areas of optical technology and has specific sub-groups in Optical Fibre Sensors; Optoelectronic Imaging; Lasers and Optoelectronic Materials, and Applied Atomic Spectroscopy.
