RMIT University aims to undertake outcome-related research and development in its areas of demonstrated research excellence, and to support innovation to underpin future economic and social development in the communities in which it operates.

Its approach to this strategy is to build depth and breadth of disciplinary competence in a number of targeted areas. The University also seeks,

  • to promote a strong practical research culture using project teams to connect disciplinary strengths, and research activity linked to teaching and learning for staff and students;
  • to focus on applied research to contribute to national and international innovation;
  • to align research activities to address issues identified by industry, community partners and other client groups;
  • to provide and to support the commercialisation of potential innovations.
Most relevant research in packaging-related topics occurs in the Faculty of Engineering. Areas of interest include biochemical and environmental processing and polymer rheology and processing. Staff in the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering have links with the internal Rheology and Materials Processing Centre and involvement in the Co-operative Research Centres for Polymers; Water Quality and Treatment; and the G. K. Williams Co-operative Research Centre for Extractive Metallurgy.
