No. 231 Nov/Dec 1975, Item 2847 (continued)

In making the presentation Mr Cameron referred first to Henry's contributions to the meteorology of the Antarctic. He published many papers on aspects of the surface and upper air circulations over Antarctic and was one of the pioneers in the field, being especially associated with the first studies of the stratospheric warming phenomenon. Henry was Leader of the International Antarctic Analysis Centre for its entire operation in Melbourne from 1959 to 1965, when it issued operational Southern Hemisphere Analyses. Then from 1965 to 1969 he was in charge of the International Antarctic Meteorological Research Centre which was engaged on high latitude meteorology with scientists from the Bureau and from several other countries.

The award also recognises the contribution Henry has made as member and office bearer in many International organisations set up to encourage and co-ordinate work in high latitude meteorology, under both WMO and the International Council of Scientific Unions. He is still a member of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and of the Australian National Committee for Antarctic Research.

Henry now is supervising meteorologist of the synoptic research section which has progress in hand on many of the most important areas in meteorology, such as weather satellites, tropical cyclones and studies of atmospheric energies.

One of the most important jobs there has been the preparation of the Basic Data Set for GARP, which is a set of analyses for the southern hemisphere south of latitude 20, which, along with similar coordinated analyses for the tropics and the northern hemisphere, is basic material for developing and testing numerical models.
