In a letter (dated 8 May 1991) to Gavan McCarthy, Mick Dexter writes: "[T]he best man was doctor George Simpson who was in Mac's year and probably his best life-long mate. George worked closely with Flynn and Traeger in setting up the Flying Doctor Service and was the first flying doctor. In later life, he became one of Melbourne's top Gynaecologists and Obstetricians."
