Series 4 Alan Barlee's Files

Alan R. Barlee began as an employee of Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited at the Laverton pigments plant in the mid-1960s, working in quality assurance and technical management. He remained at the plant through the formation of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited (PMA Ltd) in 1970, leaving to work for ICI Australia Ltd in 1973. On his return to PMA Ltd in late 1982 he worked closely with the General Manager, Mr D. K. Grant, before himself becoming General Manager in 1984, a position he held until the closure of the plant in 1991.

The records in this series span the history of the plant from the early 1960s through to closure and cover many of the primary aspects of plant operation, with particular depth during the PMA Ltd years. It appears that Alan Barlee inherited the files of previous general managers including D. K. Grant and H. A. Grayson. It is unclear when the managerial filing system was established.

In addition to the large quantity of files this series contains, it is also perhaps the most organised and structured of any in the PMA Ltd Collection. The majority of papers or files are marked with alpha-numeric codes, the letter referring to a broad section of plant operation, and the number a subset of this area. A full list of these categories (titled "General Manager's Filing Index") can be found in PMA1239, included in this series.

The majority of files contain papers which feature a single alpha-numeric code. Where files contain multiple codes these have been noted. There is also some evidence that certain alpha-numeric codes may have changed over time. A small number of files have codes crossed out, usually with a replacement code added, while other files (for example, groups of minutes marked with 'H' codes) do not appear to match the version of the GM's Filing Index found in PMA1239. However, for the majority of items the alpha-numeric codes in conjunction with the GM's Filing Index provide a good indication of the contents.

Date Range: 1960 - 1991   Quantity: 51 cm, 154 files
Provenance: General Manager - PMA Ltd

Series 5 Management - Development, and Research and Development Files

This series documents the activities of the Development departments of the Pigments Plant at Laverton (ICIANZ) and Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited (PMA Ltd), and the Research and Development department (formed in 1989) of PMA Ltd.

The majority of files in this series appear to be related to the work of D. R. Harris (referred to variously as Dick Harris or Richard Harris), who was for many years the Development Superindendent, and later the Development Manager, before being appointed head of the new Research and Development Department in 1989.

Many of the items in this series were originally housed in suspension files. Where applicable, titles have been taken from the tabs on these files and the tabs retained with the items.

Provenance: Development - PMA Ltd

Series 6 Miscellaneous Management and Administrative Files

Includes a variety of management and administrative files and paperwork, from correspondence and forms, to stationery price lists and logs of taxi trips, to technical communications and documents regarding the closure of the plant.

A number of records feature the name D. R. Harris or his initials typed, handwritten, or marked on distribution lists. Others are similarly linked to Alan R. Barlee, through either his name, or by the use of alpha-numeric filing codes from the General Manager's filing index (see Series 4) which are handwritten on some papers.

The provenance of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited has been assigned to this series as it was not possible to determine a finer provenance attribution. Also included are files pre-dating the formation of PMA Ltd, which have been assigned the provenance of Pigments Plant at Laverton.

Series 7 Correspondence Files

Outgoing correspondence from senior staff of the Laverton pigments plant under Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited and, from 1970, Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited (PMA Ltd). Included are letters, memoranda and telex transcriptions from general managers and department heads with a broad range of correspondents, including PMA Ltd's parent companies ICI and BASF. Covering a broad range of topics, the correspondence was held in suspension files sorted by date, with no apparent breaks, from 1966 until 1991, the year of the plant's closure.

Each suspension file has been divided into several parts as part of preservation work carried out during the archiving process. In most cases item titles have been taken from the tabs on these files, which have been retained in Part 1 of each group where available.

The provenance of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited has been assigned to this series as it was not possible to determine a finer provenance attribution. Also included are files pre-dating the formation of PMA Ltd, which have been assigned the provenance of Pigments Plant at Laverton.

Series 8 Visit Reports - Files

Reports, notes, itineraries and other papers regarding visits made by general managers and senior staff of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited who travelled overseas, and on occasion within Australia, to meet with other manufacturers to discuss and compare technical information and other matters.

The items in this series appear to contain correspondence and preparatory documents leading up to overseas trips, as well as copies of reports and other paperwork resulting from these trips. Some of the reports in this series are duplicates of those in the more clearly structured visit report files which can be found in Series 9.

Staff involved in these visits include Alan Barlee (in his role as a senior technical staff member, and later as General Manager), Hugh A. Grayson, D. R. Harris and Lance Rowley. Many trips included visits to ICI and BASF plants and offices in England and Germany, with other countries such as France, the United States and Japan included at various times.

The papers in this series were originally housed in three large suspension files. These files were discarded and the contents of each divided into three parts during the archiving process.

The provenance of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited has been assigned to this series as it was not possible to determine a finer provenance attribution. This includes Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited papers pre-dating the formation of PMA Ltd.

Series 18 Monthly Reports

This comprehensive series contains monthly reports which provide an overview of plant operation. Monthly reports up to and including December 1969 are headed "Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited" (ICIANZ), with subsequent reports headed "Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited" (PMA Ltd). The majority of the reports start with a summary of each area of the plant, followed by either sectional reports, or supporting information including graphs, charts, and tables of data.

Each report contains information under some or all of the following headings: product development, process development, supply, work study, services, maintenance, laboratory, Azo, Monastral, personnel, stores, safety, etc. From 1967, some reports also include some or all of the following graphs and tables: monthly control, labour utilisation, call-ins per week, back-log, productivity data, departmental performance, costs, overtime, accident frequency rates, etc.

The primary focus of the reports appears to change over time. For example, reports from 1970 to 1979 open with balance sheets, profit and loss statements and other financials. From 1980, while the reports still included similar financial information, it had been moved back into the body of the report.

The majority of reports in the series are inscribed "Mr. W. Braun", "Mr. A. Barlee" or "Mr. D. R. Harris", all of whom were Development Superintendents (or equivalent) in the periods where their names appear. It is therefore believed these monthly reports were distributed to or retained by the Development department, beginning with ICIANZ, and continuing throughout the operation of PMA Ltd. The provenance of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited has been assigned to one item in this series where it was not possible to determine a finer provenance attribution.
