Gallium

Mention has been made of the project to extract gallium from the Bayer liquor at the Pinjarra alumina refinery, which is scheduled for production in 1988. The forecast production of gallium chloride is equivalent to 50 t/a of gallium metal. Present world demand is about 30 t/a and is expected to increase with the growing demand for the gallium arsenide chip. Gallium has also been reported to occur in a newly discovered polymetallic deposit in northern WA in association with tantalum, columbium, yttrium and zirconium.
