Buchanan, Gwynneth Vaughan (1886 - 1945)

Dr Gwynneth Buchanan was a lecturer in Zoology at the University of Melbourne for twenty five years. She was a student under Baldwin Spencer, graduating in 1908. Working with a government research scholarship, Dr Buchanan obtained the degree of MSc and was awarded the DSc in 1916. For some years she was tutor in zoology at Trinity, Ormond and Queen's Colleges. 'Dr Buch' was actively involved in all aspects of University life, including being a foundation member of the McCoy Society for Field Investigation and Research.

Junior demonstrator in biology, University of Melbourne 1909, tutor in biology, Queen's College 1910-13; research on the embryology of Australian marsupials, University College, London 1913-14; senior biology mistress, Presbyterian Ladies' College 1910-20; government scholarship for inquiry into human embryology 1915; tutor in biology, Queen's, Ormond and Trinity colleges; public examiner in anatomy and physiology 1914-16; public examiner in animal morphology and physiology 1919-22; lecturer-in-charge of biology, University of Western Australia 1920; lecturer in zoology, University of Melbourne 1921-24, senior lecturer 1925-44, acting head of department 1926. Active on a number of University bodies. Founding member, McCoy Society for Field Investigation and Research 1935.
