Description

Series 12 contains a large quantity of records of Nancye Kent Perry's research into the history of her family. Her research focused on the Ashenden and Leahy family lines, on her mother's side, and the Kents, on her father's side.

Records in Series 12 include correspondence, photographs, wills, probates, obituaries, newspaper clippings, family trees, inquests, notebooks, and shipping records including passenger lists and crew lists. Many of the records in this series were stored by Nancye Perry in a filing cabinet.

PERR00754 Genealogical Notebook - Alfred Leahy and Harold Leahy

Notebook of genealogical sources, compiled by Harold Leahy. Harold Leahy, land surveyor, was Nancye Kent Perry's maternal uncle. Inscription on inside cover of notebook reads 'With the Compliments of Harold P. Langford Leahy, L. S. [Land Surveyor], M. V. I. S. [Member, Victorian Institute of Surveyors?] [etc etc] - 1951.' Subjects documented in this notebook include Harold Leahy himself and also Alfred Leahy, a land surveyor, who was Harold Leahy's father. Notebook includes a reference to Alfred Leahy in his capacity as official surveyor of Shepparton, Victoria.

Most entries in the notebook consist of handwritten extracts, including correspondence, maps, newspaper extracts, and court proceedings. Other papers, mostly news clippings, have been pasted into the diary. Assorted papers, including handwritten extracts, loose notes, news clippings and extracts from publications, were originally inserted in the notebook, including one set inside the front cover, and a smaller set of papers at page 42. Each set of inserts has been rehoused in a plastic sleeve during processing.

Content includes:
- Letter from Alfred Leahy enquiring as to frontage available for sale on High Street, Shepparton. No recipient is specified, but letter is addressed to William Street, Melbourne. Dated 21 June 1877. Annotation suggests that Alfred Leahy may have been writing on behalf of another person, possibly William Fraser. Handwritten copy;
- 'Extract from The "Shepparton News" 23 May 1878'. Extract hails the contribution made by Alfred Leahy in effecting the development of the Goulburn Valley railway. Includes names of fourteen signatories. Handwritten copy;
- ' "The Shepparton News" Thursday June 5th 1879 - Sub-leader'. A defence of the contribution made by Alfred Leahy, recently dismissed as authorised surveyor for the Shepparton district, to the taking up by selectors of grasslands in the area. Handwritten copy, four pages;
- 'Items in the life of "Rolling Stone"'. Biographical notes about the life and work of Harold Langford Patrick Leahy. Handwritten notes, five pages. Annotated by Nancye Kent Perry. There are three copies of 'Items in the life of "Rolling Stone"' extant in this inventory item;
- News clippings about the accidental death in May 1935 of Ellen Maude Fraser, Nancye Kent Perry's maternal grandmother. Original extracts from daily newspapers in Melbourne and Sydney, annotated and pasted onto a sheet. Included among inserts in the inside cover of notebook.

- 'Testimonials of Mr Charles Ashenden' (Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries, London). Two printed sheets of brief testimonials, each one accompanied by name, date and location of signatory. 1857-1863;
- 'Oyster Culture by Richard Heath (?) 1876'. Typescript;
- 'Passengers Contract Ticket' for two passengers (Surnames Heath and Ashenden), for passage from London to Port Philip and/via? Sydney. Dated 1853. Photocopy;

- Letters to Nancye Kent Perry from 'Old Nancy' at the Argus regarding Nancye's letters and other contributions, in relation to 'Fun and Fancy' prizes, books etc. Dated 1932-1936;
- Letter from Sir Douglas Mawson to Nancye Kent Perry responding to her request to accompany him on the voyage to Antarctica on the "S. Y. Discovery". Photocopy (two). Also postage stamp of the RRS Discovery. Envelope is post-stamped 15 November 1930. Also letter from Harvey Fletcher to Nancye Perry about her request to join the B.A.N.Z. [British, Australian and New Zealand] Antarctic Research Expedition. Dated 24 July 1984;
- Newspaper clippings on the advances won by Australian women to participate in research trips to Antarctica. Dated 1976-1993.

For preservation reasons, the documents in this inventory item were removed from the folder in which they were originally housed. The folder has been destroyed.
