Details In 1988, the Australian Society for Immunology became incorporated under the Victorian Associations Incorporations Act 1981 and 1983, becoming the Australian Society for Immunology Incorporated, or ASI Inc. Incorporation was seen as important as it gave the Society legal status, meaning legal action, contracts, debts, business dealings and other matters would be enforceable against the society and not against individuals in the society. The liability of an unincorporated society was seen as too high risk for the individuals involved. In addition, incorporation gave ASI Inc. the power to own property and enter into contracts without a trustee. With incorporation came the reintroduction of the office of Honorary Treasurer, which had been vacant for seven years. The Society's constitution was also amended due to incorporation. At the end of 1991, the Socety broadened its reach, merging with the New Zealand Society for Immunology to form the Australasian Society for Immunology Incorporated.
