A donation was made by David Syme of Melbourne, in 1904, for the foundation of a prize to be given for the best original research work in Biology, Natural Philisophy (Physics), Chemistry or Geology during the preceeding two years. The annual prize of one hundred pounds was founded in 1905, and open to all persons resident in Australia for not less than five years.
