The Office of the Dean of Science was created in 1903 when the Faculty of Science was established at the University of Melbourne. As stated in the University Statutes at that time, the duties of the Dean of any faculty were to superintend the educational and administrative business of the Faculty, preside over and convene meetings of the Faculty, transmit resolutions and work reports of the Faculty to the Council or the Professorial Board.
