Chapter 6 - Engineering Construction and Building

The objectives of this chapter were to set the environment for construction, to identify significant technological developments and to lead the reader to further references on specific aspects. It has been organised into nineteen sections, beginning with a brief description of construction in the settlement years. Three sections are devoted to the basic materials of construction -timber, steel and concrete -followed by fourteen sections relating to specific aspects of construction. The final section gives a very brief description of five major national projects.

Because the Academy imposed a limit on the number of words for each chapter, a significant problem arose regarding what to include from such a vast reservoir of information. It was decided that the emphasis in each section should be on significant new developments and adaptions of existing technology, as distinct from attempting a complete coverage of engineering and construction throughout Australia. Each section has been written by a distinguished engineer or architect, supported by a great many other engineers and architects, either as authors or researchers. Their work has been greatly appreciated by the Academy. The twenty-two authorities on these subjects, who have contributed their knowledge and experience in this way are listed at the end of the chapter.
