Gateways
In this case study we will explore the index as a gateway between a resource and the World Wide Web. We will start off by looking at the metadata indexing of a simple resource and then look at how that resource may be represented in a subject gateway.

Metadata Indexing Exercise
  • In this exercise we will create a Dublin Core Metadata record for a simple resource
    1. Pick an article from Eye on the Past.
    2. Save it to your PC.
    3. Open a text editor, e.g. WordPad, NoteTab and open the saved file.
    4. Open the Dublin Core Metadata Template.
    5. View the source and cut and paste as instructed into your file.
    6. Add the metadata content.

  • Now think about how you would represent that resource in a subject gateway to the History of Science in Australia.

Bright Sparcs
  • Bright Sparcs - A register of over 3,000 people involved in the development of science, technology and medicine in Australia, including references to their archival materials and bibliographic resources.

  • Comment on Bright Sparcs as an index - How does it satisfy the criteria of our indexing evaluation checklist? What other criteria does it meet? What is it lacking?

  • How would you put your resource from the metadata indexing exercise into Bright Sparcs?

  • Software to create a subject gateway - Online Heritage Resource Manager

Issues
  • Index as a gateway - power of linking indexing terms into existing infrastructure. [ See: Macfarlane Burnet ]

  • 'Authority' indexing terms - defining entities, explicit context so can act as gateway.
