Chambers was a Lecturer in Botany at the University of Melbourne from 1961 - 1964, a Senior lecturer 1964 - 1966, Professor of Botany 1967 - 1986, and, Professor Emeritus in 1995. He was also the Chairman of the Department of Botany 1980 - 1984.
